York, NY—June 12, 2015) High Tech High School’s Dance instructor Trista Redavid
DeFilippis, a former Nikolais Dance Theatre company member, recently danced in Nik: A Tribute to the Legacy of Alwin
Nikolais at the Abrons Arts Center, announced Dr. Joseph Giammarella, Director
of High Tech High School.
The Abrons Art Center
joined with the Nikolais/Louis Foundation for Dance to celebrate the legacy of
Alwin Nikolais (1910-1993), the Artistic Director of the Abrons Arts Center
Henry Street Settlement Playhouse from 1948-1969. Featuring Nikolais Dance Theatre members from
several generations—Kay Andersen Alberto del Saz,Timothy Harling, Elizabeth
Higgins, Peter Kyle, Lynn Lesniak Needle, Pamela Levy, James Murphy, and Donna
Scro—works included the classics Noumenon
(1953) and Tensile Involvement (1955).
“Trista gets our kids
so many wonderful experiences, from scholarships to classes to admission into
very prestigious dance schools,” says Allyson Krone, Assistant Principal of
High Tech High School.
Famed for pushing
beyond the boundaries of modern dance, Nikolais’ prolific imagination boldly
shaped 20th century performance and continues to inspire contemporary movement,
lighting, sound, setting, and costume design.
