High Tech’s Wendy Ide Participates in Veterans History Project

(North Bergen—June 19, 2015) Wendy Ide, a senior in the High Tech National Honor Society (NHS) and resident of West New York, under the guidance of veteran instructors David Polito and Joan Marie Bellotti, participated in the Veterans History Project, an enterprise sponsored by the American Folklife Center of the Library of Congress, announced Dr. Joseph Giammarella, Principal of High Tech High School.

The Veterans History Project collects, preserves, and makes accessible accounts of American war veterans so that future generations may better understand the realities of war.  Ide participated in this project by interviewing her grandfather, Ernest R. Vierk, a World War II veteran, at High Tech’s radio station.  Her interview, recorded over the phone with the assistance of Chris DePierro and Robert Meyer, members of High Tech’s Broadcasting and Video Production Departments, revealed how Vierk served in the 44th Infantry Divison and participated in a specialized Army German language training program.  One of his duties included interviewing prisoners of war.

The recorded log of the interview and personal World War II artifacts donated by Ide’s grandfather have been sent to the permanent collection of the Library of Congress.  The interview had proved a truly moving experience for Ide and her family.  Prior to the interview, Vierk had never shared his World War II experiences with his own family.  As a member of the Greatest Generation, Vierk leaves behind a new and permanent artifact of World War II history.

County Prep’s Theatre Arts Program performed The Seagull by Anton Chekhov

On June 4th and 5th 2015, Ms. Shields’ Theatre Arts program culminated the year with the performance of The Seagull. Considered one of the greatest plays of all times, The Seagull is quintessentially a play about unrequited love. Written by famed Russian playwright Anton Chekhov, the play is set in Russia, in a time of social and political turmoil, a time of the rise of the lower class and the tumbling of the aristocracy.
Inspired by the real-life incident of the death of a seagull, the play tells a poignant love story centered on literary non-entity Konstantin, played by Junior Jose Lupianez and aspiring actress Nina, played by Junior Samantha Killion.
At the center of this world swirling with several strong ensemble characters, we find our Matriarch, Irina Nicolaevna, a renown actress, admired by all, played by Junior Joshua Dunn. A web of love interests and heart aches pervade the rest of the characters which all seem to reflect Konstantin’s pain and suffering, and guide the subtle movement of the sad tale of devastated dreams and hopes to an unresolved end.
Such characters are Masha, played by Junior Alexia Velazquez, Medvedenko, played by Senior Chris Gawron, Sorin, played by Junior Gianni Ortega, Doctor Dorn, played by Freshman Matthew Casavecchia, Polina, played by Senior Flora Keim, Trigorin, played by Senior Isaac Martinez, Shamraev played by Junior Jonathan Dunn, Yakov, played by Freshman Jason Ortiz and the Cook played by Junior Lizzie Flores. What remains with the audience is a love for the beauty of life with its shortcomings and tears. This is the point of it all, as Chekhov himself puts it in the play: “the only thing that matter, Kostya is that one bears his cross and has faith.”
The prologue and intermission entertainment tried to recreate the concentrated historical atmosphere of that time, and to invite the audience to step into this world. This was achieved with the help of many ensemble actors who played Russian students, Russian gypsy musicians and other protesters. In the ensemble cast performed Senior Valerie O’Higgins, Junior Juan Ferreira, Sophomores Kailyn Vazquez, Nyzira Lynn, Alyssa Massa and Freshmen Julio Velazquez, Jason Ortiz, Matthew Riccardi, and Quinton Casillas.
The production would not be possible without the rest of the artistic crew: Kaylee Cox, Chris Ortiz, Sabrina Ceballo, Koutanding Wally and Julianna Yeung, who worked backstage during all the performances.

Mrs. Shields is very proud of the cast and crew. This production was also awarded the Judge’s Award at the Teen Arts Alliance Festival.

County Prep's Aquaculture Class Visits the Charles O. Hayford State Fish Hatchery

County Prep’s Aquaculture class with Mr. LaVolpe, Ms. Szymanski, Anthony Hastings, Mr. Aguiar visited the Charles O. Hayford State Fish Hatchery in Hackettstown, NJ. County Prep developed a partnership with the Hatchery back in the 2012 – 2013 school year. The New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife run the day-to-day operations at the hatchery under the management of Mr. Craig Lemon and Mr. James Hartobey.
In the beginning of the school year, Mr. Lemon and Mr. Hartobey were able to provide the classroom with live samples of New Jersey’s various freshwater fish such as: Channel Catfish, Brown Bullhead, and Bluegill Sunfish.  During the year, the aquaculture students care for the fish by testing water samples and making the necessary corrections so that the fish can thrive in a healthy ecosystem. Upon the completion of the course, the fish samples are released at various sites that are approved by the hatchery.

Mr. Lemon and Mr. Hartobey continue to support County Prep’s vision and extended another invitation for the students to tour their facility for the 2nd annual field trip. During the tour, students had the opportunity to observe the daily operations of the hatchery. Upon the completion of the tour, students had the opportunity to fish in multiple educational ponds. After the experience, students were able to develop a greater appreciation for recreational fishing in New Jersey.  The students and the hatchery remain committed to the enhancement of environmental education both in the school and in the community.

Amazing Excursion for County Prep High School Students -- Annual Whale Watching Trip

This month marks County Prep English teacher Mr. Speziale’s thirteenth year organizing his famous excursions up north.  Recently he, along with CP Math teacher Mr. Chao and two CP alumnae, traveled with sixteen County Prep Freshmen on a five-day trip, the highlight of which was an amazing whale watching experience in Massachusetts. The group attended five plays: the Broadway shows On the 20th Century and Hand to God, The Way We Get By and Cuddles in New York City, and Kiss Me Kate in Hartford, CT.  Students also went deep sea fishing in New Hampshire, spent a day at Six Flags New England, and attended a musical performance by the Felice Brothers.

County Prep Environmental Science Class Visits Liberty State Park for Beach Cleanup

On June 10th, 2015, Ms. Rose's County Prep Environmental Science students went to Liberty

State Park for a beach cleanup and quick lesson on horseshoe crabs and their annual

migrations. Due to the low tide that day, the students were able to discover the sea life and

garbage that normally would have been hidden from view. It was shocking to them how much

the area had transformed compared to when they had gone seining in the early fall. The water

had receded drastically allowing them to discover a bed of sea snails, clams, horseshoe crabs,

and much more.

Upon discovering a washed up horseshoe crab that was still alive, the park rangers

helped to move it to the shallow water where it could wet its gills and survive. The students

learned how every year around the time of May and June hundreds of thousands of these

ancient creatures make their way up to the Delaware Bay to breed. In addition to how far they

traveled, the fact that these animals have been around for over 300 million years made the

information even more astonishing.

After a successful day of making the beach a much cleaner place, the students prepared

to make one more stop before heading back to school. They went to see the goats! For those

that may not know, Liberty State Park is currently doing a habitat restoration project, using

goats to clear up both invasive and noninvasive foliage in a closed up area. Instead of using

herbicides or any other unnatural method that could disturb the environment, this is a much

more innovative way to achieve the same goal. In this way the park and the goats have

developed somewhat of a symbiotic relationship. The goats get to eat to their hearts' content,

while the park can start fresh without invasive plants choking the natives out.

Although there were many other trips previous to this one, this one might be

the most memorable for students. Not only did they collect a lot of garbage, but they also picked up

lots of priceless memories and knowledge.

Explore 2000 at Rope Course

Friday, June 5, Explore 2000 first year students worked collaboratively to overcome obstacles at Ring Homestead Camp's ropes course, thanks to the generosity of the HCST Foundation. The students agree that "the wall" was the highlight of the experience. This activity requires using the strength of the group to overcome a hurdle. They came to the realization that the skills and support they used to climb the wall , could help them work collaboratively on projects. Participants tested the limits of their comfort zone to build confidence while receiving support and encouragement from their classmates.

I had a great time doing the ropes course. I think that it really brought the first years closer. During the trip we all worked together and helped each other. All of the ativities taught us about teamwork and about working together. Some of the activities were challenging but it was a great experience.

County Prep Acting Student Stars in Professional Production

County Prep sophomore Adam Hassan plays a lead role in Art House Productions’ original play, The House of Atreus. He is performing alongside adult professional actors and members of the Actors Equity Association. Adam is a theater major at County Prep, and has performed lead roles in the school’s productions of In the Heights and The Wiz.  He is also a member of Ms.Shields' Improv Theater class, and has already graced the County Prep stage many times.

In The House of Atreus, Adam plays the son of a man returning from war.  This intense and unconventional production (recommended for ages 14 and up), is an immersive show, as the play happens on all sides of a moving audience.  Much of the story is also told through dance.  It is a one of a kind show, and has received such a great response that the run of the play has been extended another weekend.  The extension is unprecedented at the new Art House Theater at Journal Square.  The piece was created by director Mason Beggs, who also directs work for St.Peter's University, Art House Productions Executive Director Christine Goodman – a leading and highly regarded figure in the Jersey City Arts scene, and choreographer Meagan Woods – who also directs County Prep’s 407 Dance Company.

The County Prep Performing Arts programs have strong ties to local professional dance and theater, and this is a prime example of how those connections provide opportunities for our young artists.  We are so proud of Adam’s accomplishment in this endeavor.
