County Prep Student Council Opens the 2019-2020 School Year with a Successful 1st Meeting

STUDENT COUNCIL

by Arianna Mejias & Lorianne Andrades

Nothing says back-to-school like the start of Student Council, the forefront of County Prep's most anticipated and well-loved events! The first Student Council meeting of the 2019-2020 school year was held on Friday, October 4th. Although we're only a month in, the excitement was evident in all of our members. The club’s returning members in attendance are hard at work preparing for the school year and the welcoming of new members in the second marking period. Ms. Torres and Mr. Carey welcomed us back, then dove into the agenda for the months to come. When everyone dispersed to their separate committees, the room became a center of creativity. The Banner, Concessions, and Movie-Night Committees were preparing for Halloween and all of the treats that come with it. The Lock-In Committee is preparing for the much-awaited event. The coordinators for one of the biggest events of the school year, Battle of the Classes, recruited class representatives to help them further plan, manage, and execute required tasks. We're all very excited about the many events planned this school year and can't wait to share it with the staff and students of County Prep High School!

CP's Student Council Hosts Movie Night: Spider-Man: Into the Spider Verse

“We could always be Spider-Man with the mask on, but now, and perhaps more important, we can be Spider-Man with the mask off as well.”
-Miles Morales
Spider-Man: Into the Spider Verse was shown at County Prep High School’s Movie Night on March 29th. Miles Morales, a spanglish speaking, Afro-Latino teen with a love for Post Malone, Air Jordans, graffiti, and of course school becomes the teen Spider-Man of his reality, crossing paths with five counterparts from other dimensions to stop a threat from all realities. Looking at the big screen a lot of County Preppers could relate to several aspects of the movie; from Morales’ being biracial, to not fitting into societal norms, to having to rise to the occasion.
The room in which the movie was being watched contained a total of 52 students. Movie Night, which is a common event at County Prep where previous showings have included flicks such as Insidious and IT, is a way of  not only raising funds to put towards the school, but a way of connecting students to others through film. Upon entering the room students were granted the opportunity to purchase concessions to devour during the showing. In addition all were given numbered tickets for a raffle, where the winner received a copy of the movie, Spider: Into the Spider Verse. The lucky winner was #32, Danaisha Smith.

Showing the limitless possibilities of the Spider Verse, where more than one person can wear the mask, the movie definitely lived up to expectations. Solely based off of the audience’s expressions, the movie was a tearjerker, quite humorous, and with unforeseen plot twists, quite the shocker as well.  Ultimately, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse offered nearly two-hours of stunning and altogether captivating animation that beautifully rendered to bring the superhero origin story of Miles Morales - and the Spider-Verse - to life in a never-before-seen manner. Throughout the film Miles Morales was told he would never know when he was ready unless he took a “leap of faith”; this resonated with all in the audience, for the movie was filled with truths that could be applied in all of our lives. This event was put together by the Student Council, in which we’d like to thank Mr. Carey, Mr. Carey, and Ms. Torres for supervising, as well as the Student Council staff for donating their time to making this Movie Night a success.

Sophomores Take Home the Trophy in County Prep's 4th Annual Battle of the Classes!

On Thursday, January 17th, the fourth annual Battle of the Classes was held by County Prep High School’s Student Council. This highly anticipated event was coordinated by seniors Karishma Patel and Mike Chaitoo alongside Student Council advisors: Mr. T. Carey, Mr. J. Carey, Ms. Torres, Ms. Granato, and Ms. Nardone. It was hosted by Jahn Camac and Sirena Morales, both seniors. Originally started by class of 2017 alumni: Kishan Patel, Patricia Ramirez, and Joseph Mamaril, the event was only open to 300 students due to the size of the previous school gym. Since then however, BOTC has grown tremendously and has become one the of most anticipated events of the year. Now, the competition can accommodate for over 250 participants and 500 spectators due to the new gym addition.
Traditionally, there is a new theme implemented each year and this year’s theme was Superheroes. With the Freshmen as Teen Titans, Sophomores as the Guardians of the Galaxy, Juniors representing the Justice League, and the Seniors representing the Avengers, each class created a unique team banner that really was a sight to see. Each class banner allowed the teams to receive points that contributed to their overall score. These banners were judged by several teachers, including Mrs. DiSanto, Ms. Rubio, Mrs. Patten, and Ms. Mulrain, all of whom have a background in art or creative abilities.
Before the activities began, I was able to speak with a few students, both participants and spectators, to ask them a few questions. Laila Durrani, a senior that has participated all four years, said that training for the competitions year after year has brought the senior class closer together: “I think everyone should participate at least once before they graduate, it's a day you'll look back on and remember just like prom.” Sarah Sookram, a junior, said that her favorite event has always been the class dances because they allow the most creativity. She says she would love to see sumo wrestling as an event in future years.
Battle of the Classes is one of the many events at County Prep that brings students all together and raises school spirit. The atmosphere of the entire event truly was electric. The crowds of supporters, each dressed in their class colors, is a sight to behold. Each aspect of the event allowed students with different talents to shine through, from using their creative abilities in the banner, to using their athletic abilities to compete in the relays.
With the sophomores and seniors neck and neck, the tug of war momentarily put the seniors in first place. It all came down to the class dances to determine who will be the winners of the night. Thanks to their impressive step- dance routine the sophomores were put in first place once again with 121 points. Congratulations to the Class of 2021 and their advisors, Mr Aguiar, Mr. Thompson, Miss Gangala and Mrs. Winter!

County Prep's Student Council Hosts 2nd Annual Game Night

Game Night was held by County Prep’s Student Council on Friday November 17, 2017. Coordinated by a diligent team of juniors, the event bustled with exhilaration as flocks of attendees participated in a selection of engaging and entertaining games including Ninja, Just Dance 2018, and Jenga with Charades. Compelled participants were infused with a healthy dose of fun as they flooded the cafeteria. Sensations of laughter, elation and frustration resonated across the cafeteria as attendees hustled to best their friends and win tickets to participate in raffles for prizes that were distributed at the end of the event. Prizes including a Polaroid Camera bundle, Spotify Premium Gift Cards, and various toys could be won by participants of the raffle, further stimulating the competitive - yet fun - atmosphere at the event.
The event was the second Game Night held by CP's Student Council. Much like the first event, the second variation was equally successful and enthralling. The event provided students an opportunity to hang out with their friends in an arcade-like atmosphere for the bargain of $3 per ticket. It also gave them a chance to win numerous prizes and interact further with their student body. It was a gathering of students across all classes desiring to experience the thrill of competition as well as leisure, and that is certainly what they got. The event buzzed into the evening hours of six-o'clock with no sight of deteriorating engagement. Students raucously flocked to their buses upon conclusion of the event, discussing the games and joy experienced at their hangout during Game Night.
The team of juniors who coordinated the event affirmed, “The people that came enjoyed the event, even the volunteers, who helped to coordinate games held at the event." The event was similar to a casino, where people enjoyed a variety of games.”
The winners of the prizes raffled off at the end of the event were Andrew Kibalo (Grade 9), Ana Ramos (Grade 10), and Nicole Collaguazo (Grade 9). Andrew won a Chilltown State backpack, a stuffed Yoshi and Mario. Nicole won a Chilltown State backpack, a Bulbasaur stuffed animal and a funko pop of Rey from Star Wars. Lastly, Ana Ramos won a blanket and a Bulbasaur stuffed animal. Finally, all Raffle Winners won a $10 Spotify Premium Gift Card.
