The NWHL, a revolutionary league notable
for its racial and ethnic diversity, has the distinction of being the first
hockey league to pay its female athletes.

High Tech Students in Study Abroad Class Embark on European Trip
(North
Bergen, NJ—May 17, 2017) On April 13th, the Study Abroad class from
High Tech High School embarked on another wondrous journey to the European
continent this year, announced Dr. Joseph Giammarella, Principal of High Tech
High School.
The Study Abroad students, led by Dr.
Laje Gashi and instructional chaperones Joseph Ona and Dr. Nina Lavlinskaia,
followed tour director Francesca Morgano, who provided insights as he navigated
High Tech through France, Italy, Monaco, and the Vatican.
The journey spanned a fortnight from
Paris to Rome. Students visited famous places
and monuments in Paris, surveyed the Castle of Versailles, visited the chateaux
of the Loire Valley (Château de Chenonceau and Chartres, Amboise), sojourned in
Lyon, and continued along to Provence and the French Riviera.
After France, High Tech traveled to
Italy. Beginning in Florence, students
and teachers experienced the Leaning Tower of Pisa firsthand. Then, they embarked on a trip to Pompeii and
its famous ruins, Napoli, Capri, and, of course, Rome. They spent a lovely and
quaint afternoon at the Vatican to conclude their Italian holiday.
As part of the pre-tour assignment, each
student at each selected site had to step in as a local guide to provide interesting
information on such areas as architecture, culture, and even cuisine to
everyone on the tour. In all, the
wondrous journey took the Study Abroad class to splendorous castles with magnificent
architecture, world-famous museums, breathtaking scenery, and refreshing,
sun-drenched beaches.

County Prep Environmental Science Students Create Bella the Bride Bouquet
Ms. Rose's Environmental Science students at County Prep High School made a bridal bouquet out of Tyvek for Bella the Bride. It is showcased at the Deirdre Imus Cancer Center at Hackensack Hospital. Bella the Bride represents the beauty found through sustainable practices. Bella’s wedding gown is the latest addition to the Recycle Runway Collection; a traveling exhibit showcasing sustainable fashion designs made from trash. The dress personifies the importance of recycling discarded waste, specifically healthcare packaging, which could otherwise be sent to landfill. Bella’s pure white gown is pieced and sewn out of discarded Tyvek®, a clean, flexible, white plastic, sterilizable material, widely used in medical device packaging. Tyvek® was selected because of its ability to be recycled or recovered for re-purposing.
High Tech Musical Theatre Presents IN THE HEIGHTS
(North Bergen, NJ—May 8, 2017)
In the Heights, High Tech Musical
Theatre’s latest event, will be performed in the Jay Todd Black Box Theater this
spring, announced Dr. Joseph Giammarella, Principal of High Tech High School.
In The Heights, the
first hit from Broadway phenomenon Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator of the sensation Hamilton!,
tells the story of dreaming big, loving large, and also finding a place to call
home. The titular location, Manhattan’s Washington Heights, on a
stifling Fourth of July finds its residents dreaming of getting out of the inner
city. Usnavi’s bodega, Daniela’s hair
salon, and the Rosarios’ taxi service have served as the locus in bringing the
neighborhood together, yet a harsh economic climate forces these establishments
to face the possibility of being shuttered for good, thus changing the lives of
many forever. An unexpected chain of events—a blackout, a winning lottery
ticket, romantic tensions—leads residents to discoveries about each other and the
community. The original run of In the
Heights earned a Tony Award for Best Score and Best Musical, as well
as a Grammy Award for Best Cast Album.
Under the stage direction of John
Zisa and veteran High Tech musical virtuoso Rod Shepard, In the Heights will feature over fifty High Tech Musical
Theatre actors and live student musicians.
“In the Heights is a celebration of culture and love
and of what it means to live and survive together,” says Zisa. “It’s an important piece, especially in our
current political climate, and I feel that, besides the show having phenomenal
music and impressive dancing, it’s a great show to highlight the various
backgrounds and cultures that makes up our High Tech community, too.”
High Tech Musical Theatre’s performances of In
the Heights will take
place on the evenings of Thursday, May 18th, Friday, May 19th, and Saturday, May 20th, at 7pm, with matinees on that Saturday and on Sunday, May 21st, at 2pm. Tickets for
all shows on sale at www.showtix4u.com.
High Tech Cited in The Washington Post’s Annual Rankings of How Successfully Schools Challenge Their Students
(Washington,
DC—May 7, 2017) America’s Most Challenging High Schools, as ranked by The
Washington Post, selects high schools through an index formula, and this
year, High Tech has made its 2017 list, announced Dr. Joseph
Giammarella, Principal of High Tech High School.
High
Tech ranks #2 out of six Hudson County schools on the list. Overall, High Tech received a ratio of 1.962
and ranked 1,386 on the entire list.
America’s
Most Challenging High Schools incorporates
a simple ratio into its rankings: the number of Advanced Placement,
International Baccalaureate and Advanced International Certificate of Education
tests given at a school each year, divided by the number of seniors who
graduated that year. A ratio of 1.000 means the school had as many tests as
graduates.
