High Tech French Students Experience Real French Cuisine

(Northvale, NJ—May 27, 2015) Sophomore French students took the opportunity to enjoy a lovely lunch at Madeleine's Petit Paris, announced Dr. Joseph Giammarella, Principal of High Tech High School.

Earlier this school year, French students participated in Café Chic, a combination of a French-inspired fashion show and bistro. The money that the French students raised from Café Chic subsidized the trip and the lunch at Madeleine's Petit Paris.

The lunch at Madeleine's Petit Paris consisted of a three-course meal.  The choice of starters included soupe à l'oignon (onion soup), soupe de champignons (mushroom soup), and salade du jardin (garden salad).  As for the choices for the main course, poulet français (French chicken), poisson du jour (fish of the day: salmon), and pates provençales (Provence pasta) fit the bill.  Mousse au chocolat (chocolate mousse) and crème brulee rounded out the dessert menu.

“Madeleine's Petit Paris is a beautiful restaurant,” says Abigail Lopez, a sophomore at High Tech and a student of French.  “It was great to experience a slice of French culture outside of school.”

 Jalen's Reflection

While we rowed with all our strength, our class cheered us on with all their voice. We started off with a late and slow start and didn’t catch any speed until we made our way to the turning point. As we turned around the turning point mark, we cut off the leading boat, and I think we even bumped them back. Then we were in the lead and finally it felt like we were going faster. The crowd cheered like crazy as we docked our boat and placed first.

 Sarena's Reflection

I never knew that it was possible to make a boat out of recycled materials. Our first year class assembled a floating vessel with recycled materials that our teacher found and with recyclables we brought in from home. After a few days, two first year boys and a facilitator paddled across a lake in Overpeck Park on our boat. I felt really proud knowing that I helped to make that boat. I felt even more proud when I saw that our boat was in first place and we won! I still can’t believe that we made the boat from scratch out of recycled materials. This was an exciting experience that I will never forget.

High Tech High School 'Promposals' Pay Off at Prom

Laura Herzog | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com By Laura Herzog | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com

VERONA -- Many of the students at Hudson County's STEM-focused High Tech High School are going into technology-related fields--so maybe it's fitting that a student captured the fun of the year's "promposals" on camera.

High Tech student Tyler Law of Bayonne posted his video of the school's promposals on Twitter and Youtube prior to the main event on Thursday night at the Richfield Regency in Verona.

"I made the video to highlight the great promposals from this year and give proper recognition to my hardworking peers," Law said on Friday.  "A lot of people really loved it. A few people even told me that they teared up watching it."

According to senior class advisor Samantha Eulo, 210 prom tickets were bought by the class of 175 students, and nearly all the students attended.
"This is a very close school," said teaching assistant Grisel Castanon. Her daughter happened to graduate High Tech with the daughter of manager of the Richfield Regency, she said, and the graduates remain close.  "It's unbelievable," she said.
Added the school's yoga instructor Fernanda Machuca, "They're so amazing, dedicated, and they put a lot of effort into everything they do."
"I'm just kind of in shock at this point," said senior Vanessa Rosensweet, 17, after walking into the cocktail room in her red gown. "Everyone just looks so perfect."
